1. Patch

   Gaming slang

   A game update. Numbered, dated, argued about.

   “Patch 1.10 changed everything for priests.”

2. Buff

   WoW

   A beneficial effect on a player: Power Word: Fortitude, Battle Shout, food buffs, world buffs. Also, in patch notes, making something stronger.

   “Buff up, ready check in one minute.”

   “They buffed Arms in the last patch.”

3. Hotfix

   Gaming slang

   A server-side fix applied without a patch or a restart.

   “Hotfix went in overnight, the exploit's gone.”

4. Nerf

   Gaming slang

   To make something weaker in a patch. From the foam toys.

   “They nerfed Seal of the Crusader.”

   “Nerf rogues, unnerf paladins, every forum ever.”

5. PTR

   Gaming slang

   Public test realm: where patches are tested before going live.

   “It's on the PTR, so the numbers will change.”

6. DPS check

   Raiding & dungeons

   A fight, or phase, that is mostly about having enough damage.

   “Patchwerk is a pure DPS check.”

7. Parse

   Raiding & dungeons

   Your damage or healing on a fight compared to everyone else's logs for that fight and class, as a percentile. 'A 99 parse' is elite; 'a grey parse' is embarrassing.

   “Orange parse on Patchwerk, screenshot it.”

   “He parses 95 and stands in everything.”
