1. Server

   MMO

   The world copy you play on. Also 'realm'. Your friends have to be on the same one.

   The server's player market. Where the gold goes.

   “Check the AH before you farm it.”

3. Desync

   Gaming slang

   When what you see and what the server sees disagree.

   “He was already dead on the server, desync.”

4. Hotfix

   Gaming slang

   A server-side fix applied without a patch or a restart.

   “Hotfix went in overnight, the exploit's gone.”

5. Lag

   Gaming slang

   When the game responds late because of your connection or the server. The universal excuse.

   “I lagged, that's why I died. — Sure.”

6. Layer

   MMO

   A copy of a zone on the same server, used to spread players out at launch. Layer hopping lets you reach fresh spawns.

   “He's on a different layer, invite him to swap.”

7. Ping

   Esports

   Also: Latency

   Your latency to the server in milliseconds. Low is good. Also: marking a spot on the map.

   “Playing on 200 ping, every interrupt is late.”

8. Rank

   PvP

   The vanilla PvP ranking, 1 to 14, based on weekly honor against everyone else on the server. Rank 14 — Grand Marshal or High Warlord — took months of near-full-time play.

   “He hit rank 14 in 2005 and never got a job.”

   “Rank 10 weapons are pre-raid BiS for a lot of specs.”

   MMO

   Role-play: speaking and acting as your character. RP servers have naming rules and in-character chat.

   “Taverns on RP servers are actually full.”

10. Rubberbanding

    Gaming slang

    Being pulled back to where the server thinks you are after lag.

    “Rubberbanded off the bridge into the enemy team.”

11. STV

    PvP

    Stranglethorn Vale: the level 30–45 jungle zone where every PvP server's ganking happens.

    “Levelling through STV on a PvP server is a rite of passage.”

12. Tick rate

    Esports

    How many times per second the server updates. Higher is fairer.

    “Low tick rate is why your interrupt didn't land.”

13. Faction

    Alliance or Horde. You can't talk to, group with or trade with the other one.

    “Faction balance on that server is 70/30 Horde.”

14. Gank

    PvP

    To attack someone who can't fight back: lower level, half health, mid-fight with a mob. World PvP's favourite word.

    “Got ganked in STV three times on the way to the quest.”

    “It's a PvP server, ganking is the game.”

    Gaming slang

    Skill with the controls: reaction time, precision, execution. 'Mechanically gifted' as opposed to smart.

    “Mechanically he's the best rogue on the server; his decisions are another story.”

    Player versus environment: quests, dungeons, raids. Fighting the game, not each other.

    “PvE server, no ganking, just questing.”
