1. Buff

   WoW

   A beneficial effect on a player: Power Word: Fortitude, Battle Shout, food buffs, world buffs. Also, in patch notes, making something stronger.

   “Buff up, ready check in one minute.”

   “They buffed Arms in the last patch.”

2. Buff bot

   MMO

   A player brought to a group just for their buffs. Also a character parked in a city to buff passers-by.

   “We took a paladin as a buff bot, honestly.”

3. Debuff

   WoW

   A harmful effect on an enemy or you: Sunder Armor, Curse of Recklessness, Faerie Fire. Vanilla bosses have limited debuff slots, so raids plan which ones go on.

   “Sixteen debuff slots, warlocks don't put Corruption on.”

4. World buff

   Raiding & dungeons

   Zone-wide buffs from events — Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer, Warchief's Blessing, Songflower, Dire Maul tribute — that vanilla raiders collect before a raid and lose when they die.

   “Full world buffs and a flask, don't you dare die on trash.”

5. Flask

   Raiding & dungeons

   The strongest consumable: a two-hour buff that survives death. Flask of the Titans, Distilled Wisdom, Supreme Power.

   “Flask for progression only, they cost 100 gold.”

6. Tank swap

   Raiding & dungeons

   Trading who tanks a boss mid-fight because of a stacking debuff.

   “Tank swap at three stacks.”

7. Uptime

   Raiding & dungeons

   How much of a fight an effect was active: a debuff, a buff, a DoT, or you actually hitting the boss.

   “90% Sunder uptime, nice.”

   “Low uptime because of the knockbacks.”

8. Wipe

   Raiding & dungeons

   Everyone dies. Then the corpse run, the buffs, and the second attempt.

   “We wiped at 2%.”

   “Wipe it, the tank's dead and the healers are OOM.”

9. Addon

   WoW

   A player-made UI modification: damage meters, boss timers, questing helpers.

   “Which addon shows the debuff timers?”

10. Crit

    WoW

    A critical strike: a hit or heal for roughly double. Crit chance comes from agility, intellect, talents and gear.

    “I'm at 28% crit unbuffed.”

    “That Eviscerate crit for 2,400.”

11. Leeroy Jenkins

    WoW

    The 2005 video of a paladin charging a room of dragon whelps while his raid was still planning. Now a verb for charging in without a plan.
