Why it works
This is a PvP-first Affliction build: 5/5 Improved Corruption makes Corruption instant, Malediction and Improved Bane of Agony push your rolling DoT pressure, Fel Concentration protects emergency Drain Life, and Amplify Curse unlocks Curse of Exhaustion for the real win condition—keeping melee out while your DoTs tick. Nightfall gives surprise Shadow Bolt burst, while Malevolence adds a little Shadow crit value.
Gear leans into the PvP knee of the curve: around the 70 balance point you get about 1040 HP from gear and 423 armor while giving up only ~2% throughput versus the all-damage set; pushing to 85 only buys ~120 more HP while costing much more damage and even losing armor. The key pieces are the Shadow crafted cloth set, Staff of Soran’ruk for huge Shadow/Fire spell damage, Defiler’s belt/boots for spell power plus armor and run speed, and the stamina-heavy cloak/neck. The listed rings are absurdly strong beta/source-unknown items; if your group bans test-tag gear, replace them with Curl of Life and Rune-Etched Ring or Darkspear Signet.
Play like a control caster, not a turret. Keep Demon Armor up, open with Amplify Curse into Bane of Agony, apply instant Corruption, then use Curse of Exhaustion while moving to kite. Fear when you can safely create space; against casters you can swap Exhaustion for Curse of Tongues manually. Use Shadowburn to finish targets under 20%, Drain Life when pressured, and Searing Pain or a Nightfall/pooled Shadow Bolt only when you have room to cast.
