Why it works
At 39 you cannot legally reach Shadowform; it would require a 31st point. This build instead goes deep Shadow for the bracket’s real power spikes: 5/5 Blackout for random stun pressure, Mind Flay for the snare, 2/2 Improved Psychic Scream into Silence, 5/5 Improved Mind Blast, full Shadow Reach/Shadow Weaving, Vampiric Embrace, and 2/5 Darkness.
The gear leans PvP-sturdy rather than glass-cannon. Lucky Fishing Hat, Dragon’s Blood Necklace, Pads of the Venom Spider, Silky Spider Cape, Robes of the Lich, and Arena Master stack the stamina that keeps a clothie alive through opener bursts. Stormcloth Gloves, Defiler’s Cloth Girdle, Necromancer Leggings, Defiler’s Cloth Boots, Underworld Band, Staff of Jordan, and Lady Falther’ess’ Finger keep your Shadow damage threatening. Tidal Charm is the key kill trinket: use its 3 sec stun to land an uncontested Mind Blast or to stop a heal. If Alliance, use the Highlander/Arathor equivalents for the Defiler pieces.
The toughness curve’s knee is around balance 60: about 1310 HP from gear at only a 7% throughput loss. Pushing harder to balance 70 gains more HP but drops throughput to 12% below best, so this style avoids going fully defensive.
Play by prebuffing Inner Fire and shielding before contact. Against casters, Silence early or during a heal cast; against melee, force them into Psychic Scream, then create distance with Mind Flay. Keep Vampiric Embrace and Shadow Word: Pain on the kill target, use Devouring Plague when available, and spend burst windows on Mind Blast into Mind Flay. If pressured, Shield, Renew, and Flash Heal before resuming damage.
